How-Tos Day: Photoshop: Complex Marquee Selections
[The Unofficial Photoshop Weblog - photoshop.weblogsinc.com _] Sometimes selections need to be complex, adding and subtracting from initial selections. If this is second nature to you, to the point where you’ve forgotten the keyboard shortcuts you use because they’re programmed into your cerebellum just how to make your heart pump, don’t read this tutorial from Photoshop InDepth.

[CreativeGuy - Graphic Design Software Tips, Tricks and Commentary] When you apply a filter in Photoshop, sometimes you wish you could just lessen the result of the filter a little bit, without having to wait for the entire filter to run on the image again. Its almost like the filter applied too much effect for your taste. Its easy to adjust the result of a filter after it has already been applied. You simply go to Filter>Fade or Edit>Fade right after you apply the filter, which will lessen the effect of the filter. Technorati Tags: Adobe, Fade, Photoshop, Filter Tags: Photoshop...

Adobe to delete some Macromedia software after merge
[Schleifstein.net - digital media art blog] MacNN has an article (..) based on a report from NPD Techworld, they say (...) that the four applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Flash) are expected to survive the merger, while Fireworks, Freehand, and GoLive will be eliminated.

Some amazing software will cease to exist
[Digital Inspiration] NPD believes that customers will "most definitely" benefit from the merger. For example, integration between Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Flash would enable animators, Web designers and advertising professionals to "streamline their workflows." In the short run, the customer using both Photoshop and Dreamweaver "won’t need to do anything differently." Later, this customer will "probably be able to buy a single suite of tools from Adobe, resulting in significant cost savings."

FlashPaper to become a feature in Acrobat
[Digital Inspiration] Similar to NPD prediction, this report also carries good news from Flash users. Adobe Systems’ impending purchase of Macromedia has raised questions about the future of Flash. But the acquisition makes prospects for Flash-related products even brighter than before as Macromedia gets a much-needed infusion of marketing clout along with some intriguing opportunities for tool synergies.

Is Metro Microsoft's PDF Killer?
[HowToWeb.com: Computer and Technology Blog and Resource] First, the software giant wanted a way to save files from within any Windows program that could then be opened, viewed and shared without needing the specific program that created it. Second, Microsoft wanted to use the same method for sending data to a printer that it uses for displaying data on screen. So Metro uses the same method for describing and understanding graphics and text that Longhorn's Avalon graphics engine uses.

[Jefte.net] I spent a good amount of time staring at headlines with cut off bottoms before I finally landed upon the values that worked. You are not styling the flash, but rather a dummy text only version of the headline that is created a split second before displaying the page to the viewer. This dummy version attempts to mimic the flash font’s letter spacing and size so the javascript can accurately determine the real estate to occupy with the flash replacement.

Adobe Photoshop CS2
[Learning Community Group's Research Network :: Main Page] As part of Adobe Creative Suite 2.0, Photoshop CS2 integrates better than the old version with Illustrator CS2, GoLive CS2, and InDesign CS2, thanks in large part to Adobe Version Cue 2.0 and the new Adobe Bridge file-management applications. On its own, Photoshop CS2 gives professional photographers a good reason to upgrade, largely because of the new version's support for Camera Raw 3.0 and Digital Negative images and tools to reduce noise and optical lens distortion. Web designers will also appreciate that more elements of Adobe ImageReady CS2 are integrated within Photoshop CS2. Those folks wanting only to catalog and clean up snapshots for family albums, however, should look to Apple's iPhoto (part of the iLife suite) or to Corel PaintShop Pro 9.0 instead.

[Take My Advice - Im Not Using It!] This is very useful technique when you want a column to resize depending on the visitor’s browser, but you want to maintain a minimum column width. Most browsers support the CSS min-width property, but IE does not. In order to maintain a minimum width on a column in IE JavaScript must be used. We used the min-width IE JavaScript hack for the Site-in-an-Hour exercise, but we discovered that the JavaScript actually locks up IE when the browsers is resized.

P22 Cézanne Pro: P22 Announces This New and Improved Version of its Popular Cézanne Font
[Brainstorms and Raves] Designers consider Cézanne ideal for various projects. However, one of the drawbacks of its great popularity is that Cézanne may have become too recognizable and possibly not as irregular as one would wish for in a handwriting font. For example, when duplicate letters appear next to each other in a word written in Cézanne, they look identical in all instances. Longtime P22 collaborator James Grieshaber took these concerns to heart and resolved both issues by using the dynamic OpenType format.

[Learning Community Group's Research Network :: Main Page] Want to find all images with cats on your hard drive? Picasa's search quickly pulls those images together, using a variety of methods, including hunting for EXIF data contained with the digital image itself. The new edition of Picasa also burns albums to your computer's DVD or CD burner, something missing in earlier versions. For hard copies, Picasa links out to several well-known services, such as Ofoto and Shutterfly, meaning you don't have to open yet another print service account to make hard copies of photos edited in Picasa."

Using Colour And Type Effectively
[StraTechnologist] Using Colour And Type Effectively May 26th, 2005 There are lots of different mediums that good colour and typography should be used - magazines, books, posters, signage and (most applicable for us) screens. How we use colours and fonts (and just as importantly, how we use the spaces in between them) is the most telling aspect of web design - these things more than any other are what attract us to a website and also what repulse us too. Typography Ty.pog.ra.phy - The art, craft, or process of composing type and printing from it - The planning, selection, and setting of type for a printed work Good typography leaves a user with hardly any impression at all - unless the user is also a designer who can appreciate what they are seeing.
