[dsng.net - the daryl sng blog] (Link via A Capital Idea) On my Lotus Notes, my "Default Sans Serif" is Helvetica, and when I copy text from Word it sometimes pastes in as Arial, and the differences, while not immediately apparent, are immediately palpable: a slight smooshing of the letters, and odd little inconsistent curlicues.

JPEG 2000, first attempt

[NoSheep!] It does not yet support JPEG 2000, which is really important for archiving things like maps or murals which need to exist in extremely high resolutions to be able to see any of the useful details. It is also passing of the responsibility of all role and user identification to a directory or your ILS.

Black Image Quirk using System.Drawing.Image

Restoring Photoshop to Default Without Reinstalling

[Ruined My Life] If you ever run into a problem when running Adobe Photoshop where a menu might be off string, or something is totally fubared the following is an easy way to restore default settings without reinstalling. As Photoshop is starting, hold down the CONTROL + ALT + SHIFT Keys as it loads up, and restore default preferences.

Unicode Font Info

[clagnut - stick around why don't you] So if you want to code an unusual character into your HTML, such as a proper ligature like ‘ﬁ’, you can use Unicode Font Info to find the entity (by checking a huge font such as Lucida Grande) and then see what other fonts support it; something I’m finding very useful for a little project I’m slowly piecing together.

Font Management: FontBook

[CreativeGuy - Graphic Design Software Tips, Tricks and Commentary] While the latest version of Font Book provides automatic enabling and disabling of fonts through the use of Apple’s Automator, I have yet to discover how this “auto-activation” feature can be implemented to work with other applications. Therefore, any and all fonts added are automatically enabled and will activate each time the Mac is started.

InDesign CS2 Garners Strong Review Press

[Quark VS InDesign] He also cites notable QuarkXPress catchup features-shape conversions, text-wrap for anchored objects, layer show-and-hide in PSDs (as well as PDFs), and show/hide of PS layer comps (”something you can’t do in QuarkXPress”). Weaknesses feature things we’ve seen discussed before-ID won’t generate a new page when entering text into a master text frame, can’t create different-sized pages within a document, no synchronized text, no HTML export-things that QuarkXPress does do.

London - NY

[Pete's Eats] As someone in my mid-thirties I remember very clearly the IRA bombings of London in the 80's and 90's and this kind of cross-Atlantic bonding just wasn't around back then - but then also, I guess the recent attacks weren't majority funded by some US citizens which must help a bit.

you can't categorize me...

[Escape From Obsession] I've broken down and am now using categories via del.icio.us. Yes I did state, in the past, that it was too much of a hassle to implement categories this way but thanks to John over at Freshblog I've seen the light and it's pretty easy compared to the first method I attempted. As for attempting to categorize all of my old posts? Forget about it. It's not going to happen. I don't have the time or the energy to do that. By the way, does anyone else have problems viewing this blog in I.E.? I opened up my blog in Internet Explorer tonight and everything looked crazy. It seems that the front page has text that gets smaller and smaller but when you click on my archived pages the fonts look fine. Am I going insane? [CreativeGuy - Graphic Design Software Tips, Tricks and Commentary] Typographers quotes (curly quotes) look great don’t they? InDesign converts all straight quotes to curly quotes by default, but if you want a straight quote, it’s fairly easy to get them.
