[Sarsaparilla] In defence of tie-ins: This 1975 Hale paperback is technically not a tie-in - it belongs to a sub-category of movie covers where the publisher clearly wants to establish and trade on an association with the film, but hasn’t actually used copyrighted film images (in this case, they probably weren’t available; Universal have guarded their Hitchcock properties jealously.) Two things stand out about this cover: it takes for granted that there is not one single potential reader of this novel who isn’t already intimately familiar with its first big infamous narrative shock (not much point in avoiding spoilers, then), and it aggressively rejects the movie’s clinically detached black - and - white imagery, in effect claiming that the book has an original lifelike vividness which the film withholds.
