Graphic Design Blog > B-Quark Jets: Keys to New Discoveries

[Scientific Blogging] DorigoIn this two-parts article I wish to describe in some detail, but still at an elementary level, the characteristics of one of the most important probes of the physics of subnuclear collisions at today's particle physics experiments: jets of hadrons originated from energetic bottom quarks, or more familiarly, b-jets. By posting a dedicated article on b-jets, I hope I will be able to describe in more detail elsewhere other physics topics, such as Higgs boson decays or top quark signatures, without being hampered by having to introduce the phenomenology and detection of b-jets from scratch every time.

[Scientific Blogging] Energy Calibration of B-Jets: Part II: The idea is that if one manages to select Z+gamma events -Z boson production when the Z recoils against a high-energy photon- with the Z decaying to b-quark jets, the calibration of the b-JES becomes a child trick, since the system is kinematically over-constrained by the very well-measured transverse energy of the photon. The trick is that Z->bb +gamma events do not suffer from the usual background of Z->bb events, because the requirement of the additional photon automatically kills all initial states with gluons in the QCD background -and those are the largest source of background.

[Scientific Blogging] A Retractatio on the Lepton Jets Affair: I should remind everybody that the CDF paper solves some important inconsistencies of past measurements of b-quark cross sections and phenomenology at the Tevatron. Those achievements will stay regardless of what is the source of the muon excess described in the paper, be it BSM physics, nuclear interactions, or simulated events inserted overnight in the data.

[Scientific Blogging] Hadronic Dibosons Seen. Next Stop: the Higgs!: In order to find decays of vector boson pairs the authors of the analysis -Gene Flanagan (Purdue University), John Freeman (FNAL), Alexandre Pranko (FNAL), and Vadim Rusu (FNAL) decided to completely overturn the usual strategy by means of which leptonic decays of vector bosons are found -the prerequisite which is the necessary first step before one can go on to search a second, hadronic vector boson signal in the selected events. While for that first step one usually relied on datasets containing a well-identified, high-energy electron or muon, the CDF authors totally ignored these final state particles.

[Scientific Blogging] HERA's Intriguing Top Candidates: The figure is a bit too technical for the level of this post, but in summary what is plotted is the value of two "anomalous couplings", numbers which parametrize the possibility that the Standard Model needs to be extended with interactions connecting a flavor-changing quark line with a photon (on the horizontal axis) or with a Z boson (on the vertical axis). The name of the game is restricting these two parameters to be as close as possible to zero -zero being the prediction for the Standard Model: no FCNC interactions.
