[Musings from Mars] Tell Me One Thing You Can Do With a Mac that I Can't Do With Windows!: Yet Microsoft has never responded to this customer requirement, pretending that PDF doesn't exist and that Windows users would never need a PDF reader. The reason why is clear: Microsoft views PDF as a threat to its dominance of the office productivity software market, as well as a potential threat to Windows. After all, if everyone can quickly convert files from any software into a cross-platform PDF file, the fact that you're using WordPerfect while I'm using Microsoft Word diminish pretty quickly. Adobe has great tools for marking up PDF files and building a document management system based on PDF, so the operating system and software that a given author uses to create and manage the file lose their significance.

I imagined at a certain moments how much easier and more fun the whole experience would be if I was sharing it with another author (or had a friend willing to be a roadie for a few days). The costs might be lower or the same, but the logistics would be much easier, the social would draw more people, etc. Not sure it would work, but it was a thought I had several times.
