[OJDLA Journals & News] Multimedia Presentation Software Solutions for Internet-Based Courses: A significant driving force behind the current explosion of electronically-based distance learning solutions was the advent of the World Wide Web in the mid-1990s, which changed forever the concept of distance, making it solely a matter of degree (Lichtenberg, 2001). Although Internet-based education is flourishing in a number of venues including corporate training (Pace, 2001), the authors will restrict themselves in the present case to academic institutions of higher learning, specifically public and private 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities.

[Jesse Ezell Blog] Silverlight vs. Flash: The Developer Story - Jesse Ezell Blog: On the other hand i think that the author is not being fair to flash, microsoft pushed SL just because they wanted to compete with FLASH, and like some other users said, because they HAD TO if they want to stay in the WEB side of things, flash started as basic animation software and they integrated the scripting little by little never thinking of competing with MS on the development field, .Microsoft is all about application development nothing else and even though they have been doing this since the birth of windows they still can pull out a system as stable as the OSX os why because they are too lazy to develop a new system core or a new way of doing things, they are known to build one thing on top of the other sort of upgrade over upgrade over upgrade same thing is going on with with SL.

[James Fee GIS Blog] James Fee GIS Blog » Blog Archive » Open Thread: We haven’t (not are we trying to) pushed ESRI out and we still use it as it is part of our water modelling software. But for all of our actual GIS analysis, we use a combination of Manifold, open source (mainly for 3D and utility) and MS SQL Server - can’t wait for 2008:-) A couple of our clients have also switched over to Manifold, while a handful of others who are new to the GIS game (and therefore not part of the ESRI community already) are playing with various options such as Manifold, Cadcorp, QGIS and others.
[Lambda the Ultimate - Programming Languages Weblog] 2008 In Review - What Happened with Programming Languages ...: (The aforementioned JavaScript already has a good head start there.) Primarily functional languages like F# will be investigated and experimented with (see also Erlang, above), but won't be serious competitors to the likes of C++, C#, JavaScript, Python, etc. The really aggressive functional languages (Haskell, Ocaml, etc) will never be more than academic curiosities.
[Linux DevCenter] Why I Haven't Reviewed Puppy Linux - O'Reilly Linux DevCenter Blog: since they can't post drivel and ad hominem attacks on me on my own blog I get attacked and have my professional credentials questioned on the comments section of Distrowatch Weekly or in the Puppy Linux forum. Never mind that no organization I've ever done work for, either corporate or governmental, would ever allow a hobby distro with no professional commercial support to be installed in their facilities.
[Cricketdiane's Weblog] The brief version of what I have found about the causes of the ...: Shortly before Congress passed a new law in August 2007 that legalized warrantless surveillance, the Protect America Act of 2007, critics stated that such domestic intercepts required FISC authorization under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.[2] The Bush administration maintained that the authorized intercepts are not domestic but rather foreign intelligence integral to the conduct of war and that the warrant requirements of FISA were implicitly superseded by the subsequent passage of the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists (AUMF).[3] FISA makes it illegal to intentionally engage in electronic surveillance under appearance of an official act or to disclose or use information obtained by electronic surveillance under appearance of an official act knowing that it was not authorized by statute; this is punishable with a fine of up to $10,000 or up to five years in prison, or both.[4] In addition, the Wiretap Act prohibits any person from illegally intercepting, disclosing, using or divulging phone calls or electronic communications;

[Signal vs. Noise] Why we skip Photoshop - (37signals): Because CSS is more limited than Photoshop in what it can do visually, I was placing those restrictions on my designs (albeit inadvertently—of course I could have gone in to Photoshop just to create a little image here and there, but doing so seemed like a chore, and I had decided I was skipping Photoshop, so it felt counter-productive to use it, even if it really wasn’t). I guess I just wonder if your minimalist, simple, flat, aesthetic is inspired by the tools you use (or in this case, don’t use).
